Everything goes wrong after you’re put into a medically induced coma following a microchip implant. The station is filled with mutants and cyborgs under the control of Shodan, and your mission is to stop Shodan from using the station’s mining laser. They want to destroy every major city on Earth and declare themselves the gods of artificial intelligence.
The text and voice acting remain excellent. The original game came out in 1994, and after seeing this remake using Unreal Engine, it’s a real treat to play it again. System Shock (2023) is simply stunning. The lighting and colors capture the spirit of the original game while skillfully using its updates. What hasn’t been fully updated, and that’s a good thing in my opinion, is the gameplay.

System Shock combines first-person action with deep exploration and role-playing elements. Players must gather resources, unlock new areas, and confront enemies in a limited environment. Due to limited resources, you must carefully consider your decisions rather than constantly engaging in combat.
As you progress, the complex map and increasingly dangerous enemies force you to observe, remember, and adapt. This makes the survival experience both thrilling and enjoyable.
A Meticulously Crafted Sci-Fi World:
The game constructs the space station as a living labyrinth of interconnected, multi-layered zones. Each zone bears the marks of past catastrophes, from abandoned laboratories to crumbling dormitories.
The story unfolds slowly through characters, sounds, and the environment, without direct explanation. As a result, players can clearly feel the collapse of humanity and the cold, ruthless power of SHODAN.
A Unique Atmosphere of Psychological Horror:
System Shock doesn’t rely on terrifying surprises; instead, it focuses on creating a lasting sense of dread. Metallic sounds, warnings, and Shodan’s distorted voice keep players on edge.
The dim lighting and confined spaces enhance the viewing experience. This approach creates a profound psychological horror unlike many traditional action games.
