Perhaps a priest or an NPC we helped would automatically bestow a blessing or miracle upon us, or we would eat magic bread to heal our wounds after combat; this would have added a bit more excitement to the game. Ultimately, it didn’t matter; when our bad luck reached its limit, disabling weapons we didn’t want to lose prevented us from losing them, so the negative impact was minimal.

Alongside this poorly designed mechanic, other negative aspects began to accumulate in the form of basic, outdated gameplay mechanics and exploration. Combat in Yaga is completely ineffective. You have a hammer to crush enemies, you can throw it (with very little accuracy), and you can roll and use a grappling hook to escape; that’s about it.

Ivan’s blacksmithing skills allow you to craft different versions of your hammer to add some variety to the game—you can create one covered in fire or thorns, or one that slows down time when hitting creatures—but overall, the combat system remains the same from start to finish.

The game is quite monotonous, only saved by the entertaining conversations you have with the quirky NPCs you encounter along the way. In fact, the fully voice-acted writing and dialogue are a huge plus. A single playthrough of Yaga lasts about six hours, which is relatively short, but it’s designed to be played multiple times to explore the different outcomes of Ivan’s story stemming from your various choices.

Despite the game being generally disappointing, the story and voice acting are entirely to our praise; we were eager to return to finish the story and see how much difference a different approach made.
